OUR GROWTH
The journey to Sweet Spice & Honey began during the housing crisis of 2009. At the time, I was working as a temporary consultant and, like many others, I was laid off. Overwhelmed with emotion, I decided to take a walk to clear my head. That walk led me to a store in Highland Park, NJ, called Ten Thousand Villages.

This store sold artisan products crafted by producers from developing countries, offering them a global platform to address economic injustice. As I wandered through the store, my sense of self-pity began to dissolve and was replaced by deep admiration for these artisans. Reading their stories, I learned about the immense challenges they faced—many of them lacked access to basic conveniences like 24-hour indoor lighting or a stove to cook whenever they wished.

In that moment, a realization struck me: I had access to so many resources and needed to make the most of them. Inspired, I decided to stop feeling sorry for myself and take action. I began by approaching a few local store owners, asking if I could sell slices of Banana and Carrot loaves in their shops. They agreed, and I made $30 that week—just $30—but it was the most meaningful money I had ever earned. It sparked pride, purpose, and the seed of what would become Sweet Spice & Honey.

Today, that same spirit of resourcefulness and respect for global food traditions continues to guide everything we do.
